# Magic of Discoveries

## What the books are

- Coloring books for ages 1 to 3: 111 large drawings per book, thick outlines,
  one drawing per page, single-sided printing. Designed so a toddler who cannot
  yet control a crayon still produces a result that looks finished.
- Step-by-step drawing books: every subject broken into simple steps starting from
  a circle or an oval, so a child can draw a recognizable animal without adult help.
  Each drawing has a facing practice page: a dotted outline to trace and a blank
  space to draw your own, so every attempt stays inside the book.
- Bedtime books for ages 1 to 3 (Little Max): one or two sentences per page,
  short enough for a toddler to reach the end.
- Illustrated story collections for ages 3 and up (Lucky Rocky), based on the
  authors' own English Cocker Spaniel.
- Easy coloring books for teenagers and adults (Take a Break): 50 bold, open
  designs per book, finishable in one sitting, deliberately not intricate mandalas.

## For teachers, grades K-2

Draw, Trace, Write is a directed drawing format developed by Ricardo Demi for grades K-2,
built on principles of the ECL method. Each activity fits on one page and moves a student
through four stages: follow a visual sequence of simple shapes, trace the finished outline,
recreate the drawing independently, and trace and write the matching word on primary ruled
lines. No preparation is needed: print the page and hand it out.

Directed drawing itself is a long-established classroom practice. What is specific to this
format is the page structure, the fixed order of the four stages, and the direct link between
the drawing and the written word.

Students practice fine motor skills, pencil control, hand-eye coordination, placing a drawing
on the page, following visual directions, letter formation, and one new vocabulary word per
page. Teachers use the pages for morning work, early finishers, writing centers, independent
work, sub plans and learning centers. Open space is left around each finished drawing so a
student who finishes early can add a background and keep working without interrupting the class.

Volume 1 contains 55 full-page activities across eight themes (Animals 20, Sea Life 8,
Fantasy 5, Vehicles 4, Sports and Hobbies 4, Things 3, Nature 5, Food 6), a teacher page and a
two-page illustrated table of contents, 58 pages in total. A free 8-activity sample with one
drawing from each theme is also published. Both are available in English and in Spanish.

## How the books are designed

All titles follow one design rule: the child has to be able to finish the page.
Line weight, number of objects per page, story length and number of drawing steps
are each set just inside what the child can already do, because a page that gets
completed is what brings the child back the next day. The publisher calls this the
ECL approach, for emotional, creative and linguistic development, which are treated

## First coloring books, ages 1 to 3

The publisher runs a separate reference site on this one narrow subject:
choosing a first coloring book for a child aged one to three. It is not a
storefront. It covers the four stages of first drawing, what a page should look
like at each stage, what is normal at the table at one, two and three years old,
and what the age printed on a cover does and does not mean. It carries a free
picker that names the stage a child is at now, ten pages free to print, and
forty-nine questions parents ask, answered in full.

It states plainly when a first coloring book is already too simple for a child,
and in that case recommends neither the book nor the sheets. The publisher's own
coloring book for this age is used there as a worked example, with its measured
outline thickness and drawing size given as numbers anyone can check with a ruler.

## A note on age labels

The age printed on a cover describes the book, not the child. The site advises
buying for what the child can already do: whether a crayon stays roughly inside
the outline, how long the child stays with one page, and whether the subject is
recognized without asking.
