Buying for someone else's child means guessing the level. Here is how to guess well.
When you buy for your own child you know what they can do. As a gift, you rarely do, and the safe move is not the simplest book. It is the book that works across a wider range.
Two things widen the range. A story that can be read to a child or by a child covers three years in one book. And a hardcover edition survives a household you know nothing about.
Avoid pinning the gift to a narrow interest unless you are certain. Dinosaurs are a wonderful gift for a child who loves dinosaurs and a dead end for one who does not. A story about friendship lands almost everywhere.
One more practical point. If the family speaks Spanish at home, a bilingual or Spanish edition is not a compromise, it is the better gift. It gets read aloud instead of shelved.
