The child now stays inside the line. The problem changes: boredom, not difficulty.
Once control arrives, a book of single simple shapes stops holding attention. The child finishes in a minute and asks what else there is. That is not a sign to jump straight to intricate patterns.
What works at this stage is variety and a little more inside each drawing. Several elements on a page, recognizable scenes, themes that change often enough that the next page is a small surprise.
Detail should grow, but slowly. Pages built from very fine lines and dense pattern belong to a different activity. A child who has to work for twenty minutes on one corner usually leaves the book.
Themes matter more than parents expect. Animals hold nearly everyone. After that it splits: some children want vehicles and machines, some want fairy tale characters, some want food. A book that covers many themes lets the child find their own.

Watch for two signs together: the color stays inside the line without concentration, and the child chooses to keep going after finishing a page. Age alone is a poor guide.
