Animal first words are the names of animals a small child already meets at home, at the park and in picture books: cat, dog, cow, bear, lion. On a coloring page each animal gets a full page to itself, drawn with thick outlines, with its name printed below in hollow letters that can be colored too.

Pick an animal. Color it together. Say its name. Make the sound if you know it. Sometimes “meow” is all the conversation you need.

Color
Hand the page over and let the child color. One object, thick outlines, nothing else on the sheet to get lost in.

Say
Name what is on the page while they work. Cat. A cat says meow. Where are the cat's ears? Nothing to prepare, you already know the words.

Notice the word
The word is printed under the picture in hollow letters, so it can be colored too. Point at it, read it out, move on. No drills, no testing.

Questions Parents Ask
Which animal words should we start with?
Start with whatever your child already notices. Maybe it is the family dog. Maybe a duck at the park. Maybe, for reasons known only to toddlers, an elephant. There is no required order.
Are zoo animals too difficult for a two-year-old?
They do not have to be. A child does not need to meet a lion in real life to enjoy pointing at one. Picture books, toys and stories are part of a toddler's world too.
